Description

This statue was commissioned in honor of the California Midwinter International Exposition in 1894.

It's placement marks the spot where the first "shovel full of earth was turned" by President William Taft in preparation for this first global fair in western America. The sculpture was dedicated on August 24, 1893.

West of the Spreckels Temple of Music, along Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park's Music Concourse
