Description

This project was part of the DCCAH’s Community Initiatives, which seeks community input for the beautification of our neighborhood streets, side walks, and parks. Activists hoped to transform Unity Park, which was once described as dangerous and in a state of disrepair, into a “miniature Dupont Circle.” The DCCAH acknowledged this and commissioned Adams Morgan resident and artist Jerome Meadows to create a sculpture for the park.

Entitled “Carry the Rainbow on Your Shoulders,” Meadows’ work consists of a sculpture of a child, embellished with rainbows, riding on an adult’s back, as well as a fountain pool and planting area. Engraved in the sculpture is the sentence: “Unity through Diversity.” Meadows’ sculpture illustrates a cohesive community and provides a positive outlook for the future of Unity Park.
