Description

This statue was commissioned as a tribute to General Pershing and “the victorious armies of the United States and her co-belligerents during the World War 1914-1918”. It was funded by Dr. Morris Herzstein.

General Pershing led the American Expeditionary Forces to victory over Germany in World War I. He's the only American to be promoted to General of the Armies while he was still alive. This highest possible military rank has only been held one other time -- it was awarded posthumously to President George Washington in 1976.

Location

At the far east end of Golden Gate Park's Music Concourse, where Bowl Drive meets Music Concourse Drive
